Experiments with the XSI - Balboa Park

I have been IN LOVE with my Canon Rebel XSI since I got it last week. Today I had the time to take it out and start shooting just for fun (and for practice). I went to Balboa Park, which is a great place next to downtown San Diego (and adjacent to the San Diego Zoo). It is a HUGE park which is home to museums, art galleries, historic buildings, botanical gardens and a large craft center. Basically it's a mecca center for the local San Diego art scene (so an obvious choice to go and shoot).

Unfortunately I was only able to stay for a half hour because I had to leave a meet a friend for lunch (never ending pasta bowls at Olive Garden YES) but I still got some pretty good pictures.

I am only using the creative modes on my camera (the modes which you control the aperture and the shutter speed) so I can learn how to take the picture (vs. the camera taking the picture). I am planing on taking an online photography class over the next month (once I get some money haha)

Fourth of July Picnic

I hope everyone had a great holiday! Ashleigh and I headed west to Staunton, where we stayed with Pat Jarrett and visited with my good pal Maria. 

I packed my picnic basket before we left so we would have delicious snacks while we watched the bluegrass and gospel bands at Gypsy Hill Park. 

What was in my basket? Strawberries, angelicots (rare white apricots), havarti, brie, cheddar, mini French baguettes, Orangina and four cans of Francis Ford Coppola's Sofia sparkling wine. Delicious.

On Sunday, we went to Staunton Grocery, one of my favorite restaurants ever. On Sundays, they have a prix fixe menu — three courses for $35 with a $12 wine pairing for each course. So good!

I had potato-leek soup with bacon and chives, grilled heritage pork with peach relish and black-eyed peas and the piece de resistance, chocolate soup with a hint of orange and mini cinnamon beignets. It was amazing. If you're ever in the Shenandoah Valley and have money burning a hole in your pocket, it's a must-stop.

My Good Friend Brian and his Photography

I have known Brian pretty much FOREVER. He was the guy that introduced me and my husband back in 7th grade (yes people, 7th grade) and he was Kyle's best man at our wedding *picture below*

He had just told me that his photographic hobby has become a real passion for him! Since the beginning of this year he had talked to me about photography and he said that he wanted to start taking more pictures and experimenting with different techniques. Last month he got a really nice camera (Cannon Rebel XSI...nice!) Now I would love to someday get a SLR camera and learn a little more around taking good quality pictures. (for some reason that goes hand in hand in my head with "I want to be able to take beautiful pictures of my babies, when i have them!). But for now I am good with my Cannon point and shoot that kyle got me for Christmas (it's pink thank you very much)

Anyway I am excited to see what he comes up with this summer. I will post some of his work as soon as he sends me some to look at. He did some engagement sessions for one of his friends last month and he is taking some photography classes this summer.

It's a boy!

Now don't get all excited... no babies on board at the I.D.O. studio, but we did just finish creating our first ever baby banner! Now as you know we're all about weddings over at I.D.O. but Mommy-To-Be, Joy, loved the look of our monogram 16A and thought it would be the perfect touch to have one of our hand-painted banners hanging over the crib in the nursery. We really enjoyed making this banner and we hope it brings Joy and her beautiful baby boy lots of happiness!

Real Wedding: Megan + Kyle

We somehow got extremely lucky googling when we stumbled upon Inara Studios amazing photography blog. As we were scrolling through pages and pages of captivating images of weddings, engagement portraits, and bridal shoots, we found photos of Megan & Kyle's wedding... we recognized their logo right away. The couple already had their own logo when they came to us in Spring of '08 and we were happy to put in on an aisle runner for them. We love how they incorporated it into all their little details... from the wreaths on the front door to the gobo projected behind their beautiful cake, their cookie favors & cups, and even on the fruit display! Super cute and creative. A huge thank you to Inara Studios for allowing us to use their incredible images and a big congratulations to Megan & Kyle!
