11 months of Nursing....are we having fun yet?

I have been a medical surgical RN for around 11 months now, and I am ITCHING for a change.

It became clear to me last night, while I was charting after I gave report. We have a computer charting system at our hospital which in some ways have made our lives even harder because instead of taking 15ish minutes of paperwork per patient, it now takes more like 20-30 minutes per patient times 5 patients if there are NO admissions, discharges or transfers (which on PM shift never happens. So on average we are charting for 25 min for around 6 people per shift which is a total of 2.5 hours of charting on top of everything else we have to do during a shift. Pass meds, check sugars etc. Plus it is common-place for our CNA's to have a 15:1 ratio which means half the time the RN's are changing and positioning patients as well. It is a freaking miracle to get through the shift and go home on time. Most of the time 75% of us are still there long after 2330 has passed, finishing our charting.

I have herd through the grape vine that this is more common then not on a medsurge floor. We are chronically understaffed, under-appreciated, and over-worked. And the worst part of it is that it is burning me out already. I HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN AN RN FOR A YEAR YET. that's not OK by me. I didn't go into this career to dread going to work every day. I need to make a change and I need to make it soon.

The hardest part is that I knew from day 1 that I never wanted to be a med-surge RN but I took this job because I needed to work. I have made good connections through this job and I have thought about transferring to the ER in the fall. But now I don't know if I really even want to do that anymore. I know that was what I wanted to do in college but the more I think about it the more unsure I feel. A lot of the things I don't like about my med-surge job will follow me into the ED (ex. the patient population) I feel guilty about it but I don't get the enjoyment out of my job that I feel I should

I am thinking again about going back to my original thought of Labor and Delivery. I am just frustrated because I don't know what I want, I just know that what I am doing now is not it.

My son rarely nurses now. I have to make an effort to even document it. I am posting this just to show you that we are still nursing and still getting benefits from it, namely bonding and calming him down. i did not force him to cut down, he just started to nurse less on his own. At 32 months he nurses at night for about 3 minutes and that's just about it.

I was so excited when she agreed to write a guest post for this week, sharing an excerpt from her upcoming book, to be released by Chronicle Books in February 2009. In this passage, she shares some tips about writing your own wedding vows...


Want something a little more personal than the standard (and outdated) promise to "love, honor and obey?" Couples who have a non-traditional wedding usually decide that non-traditional vows are in order, as well. Plus, writing your vows adds a nice, personal touch to the ceremony. Here are some tips for penning the perfect vows:

- If you're having a religious ceremony, talk to your officiant to see if there are any rules or restrictions you should be aware of.
- Decide whether you want to sit down together and write one set of vows that you'll both say, or work separately to create different vows.
- Traditional vows can be a great place to start. Look for a structure you like, then add the personal touches that make them your own.
- Be personal, but not too personal, and avoid being cutesy or suggestive. Picture watching the videotape of your wedding on your five- or ten-year anniversary (perhaps alongside your children!). Will you be embarrassed or proud?
- Try reading your vows out loud. You can also tape record them and listen to them played back. This will give you a better idea of how your words will come across than reading them on paper will.
- Make sure there are no awkward sentences you'll stumble over on your big day; if you're having difficulty with a particular passage, edit it for readability.
- Practice your vows, but think twice about trying to memorize them. Vows are something you don't want to blank out on. Either read them from a slip of paper or repeat them after your officiant.
- There are lots of great examples of wedding vows in books and on the Internet that you can use as inspiration. Feel free to borrow wording or structures that you like.

Popcorn Bar Stickers

I created wedding invitations for Tanisha and Vincent back in January and their wedding is just now less than a week away. They asked me to create a few of the remaining pieces for their wedding including these adorable round stickers for their guests to use at the Gourmet Popcorn Bar, a seating chart and a bar menu. They are all done in the same color scheme: tiffany blue, black and white and these stickers are just an adorable way for the guests to seal their bags after they fill them up!

Meet the Parents

Remember "Meet the Fockers"? That's my life this weekend. 

That's right, my parents and Sean's parents are meeting for the very first time. We've been dating for nearly 4 1/2 years, but because our families live 8 hours apart, they've never met. So Sean's parents are graciously trekking south to Abingdon to meet the fam. It promises to be awkward/awesome/hilarious and I'm pretty excited. Look forward to pictures!

It's time to remember the magic.....

Ok let's get one thing out in the open right now....

I LOVE DISNEY WORLD

I know everyone says that, but I am really not kidding. The first time I ever went to Disney World when I was 13, the ENTIRE YEAR before while my parents were saving $$ I was planning the trip. I mean I planned where we would eat, which park we would go which day, which ride had the shortest line at which time, the shortest path to the best viewpoint for the fireworks display. I knew the entire layout of all 4 parks before I even stepped off the plane in Orlando. I had read and re-read the unofficial guide to Walt Disney World so many times the spine of the book broke...I am really not kidding!

I was also lucky enough to go again a year later, with my high school marching band

Now next week Kyle will be on his pre-deployment leave. and I just so happen to have three days off of work right in a row....so where do you think I want to go???

"Hey Kyle....Disneyland is only two hours away......."

Now I have never been to the smaller Disney Park, but since I live in California...I can't NOT go!

We leave next Friday morning......
