Neverending Pork Disasters

por | | 0 comments

Neverending Pork Disasters
Today's dish started out easy enough: onions and apples. The recipe, from "Anyone Can Cook" (where else?), was for Pork with Apples and Onions. Pretty simple. But, as always, I realized I didn't read the recipe that closely. AFTER already cooking the apples, I noticed it said "cooking apples." What are cooking apples? Seriously?

Neverending Pork Disasters

The directions said to melt some butter, add onions and let them hang out for about 10 minutes. I did that. They turned brown pretty fast. Pretty soon, they were black. But being the stubborn person I am, I insisted on following the instructions. If they say 10 minutes, I'll do 10 minutes.

Neverending Pork Disasters
This was a fairly monumental mistake. Onions? What onions? All I see are black shreds of nasty. Already flustered by the Onion Disaster, I forgot to salt and pepper the pork. I just tossed it in the skillet with olive oil and watched the fat drip off. Seriously, that is the most disgusting part of cooking thus far.

Neverending Pork Disasters

So we ended up with overcooked, unseasoned pork on a bed of black onions and apples that Sean said absorbed too much apple cider vinegar for his taste. It was literally the first meal I couldn't finish. Sean tried to say it was still good; I tossed the last few bites. I have a strong aversion to meat that takes 40 years to chew, so this wasn't working for me. I think it's safe to say, I don't much care for this recipe.

I hope your cooking fares better this weekend! Tomorrow we're making very simple burgers from that pre-formed patty meat. Does anyone have any advice on seasoning the pre-formed patties?

Title: The Neverending Story

This is my brother performing his version of "The Neverending Story," written by Giorgio Moroder and performed by Limahl for the 1984 movie, "The Neverending Story." It was a pretty good marketing idea for those producers, I mean, it's a story that never ends. I think they stopped at "The Neverending Story 3."

and a LIFETIME of CONFUSION SIMPLIFIED
AT LAST!

Here we go againyouve entered the Masjid and overheard yet another debate over the halaal meat issue or how long your beard should be. Is it sunnah to wear a koofi, fardh to wear niqaab, haraam to sit on silk?
Have you ever heard anyone say:

"What is wrong with a Big Mac? If it's not pork, Alhamdulillah!!!"

or,

"Don't you know that's haram? It has gelatin!"
"No brother, I called the company they said its 'beef' gelatin."
"Really, does that mean the gelatin in Skittles is halal to eat?"

or,

"Sister, why did you buy that Gucci handbag, its made out of pig skin, its haram to touch!"
"My uncle has a long beard and he said its ok, so it must be right!"

or,

"Hey look at him, why does he always have his pants rolled up, what's wrong with him?"

or,

"Skirt or jilbab? Its all the same! Niqaab is only extra.

These are only some of the confused statements made about food and clothing, and Im sure you have more of your own.

AlMaghrib Institute is exuberant to introduce its latest single-weekend seminar, the unprecedented seminar of the year, designed to put an end to the never-ending debate of halaal and haraam, and at last, provide you with the opportunity to walk away with clear understanding and to stand on solid ground. Be confused no more!

By the end of this astounding seminar, you will be able to:

* Recognize the different evidences and their validity for each opinion
* Gain clarity on overlooked yet crucial actions regarding food and clothing
* Raise your level of imaan by connecting deeper to the commandments of Allah
* Acquire stronger appreciation for the importance of modesty
* Teach your children or students the intricate daily etiquettes of food and clothing
* Explain without hesitation to non-Muslims about what you eat and wear
* Attain deeper appreciation and understanding of the efforts of our scholars
* Know the best way to respond to accusing claims or insinuations

Title: info on DVI cables

if you own a computer and want to get the most out of it or your using it for video editing or gaming, you may have bought a new graphics card and you may notice along side the blue VGA or d-sub socket (the one you plug your monitor into) there may be a longer white (sometimes yellow, black, and even gray) socket, it may be labeled DVI (digital video interface). most monitors are coming with this type of connection now and you may think great ill go out and buy a DVI cable and make use of that socket, but you know theirs loads of different types of DVI cable, and if you don't know you may buy the wrong one get home and find it doesn't fit, AHHH, NOW WHAT...

This video will hopefully prevent this annoying but VERY common situation.

This is a video showing you 5 different types of DVI cable what they do and more importantly how they are different.

More info coming soon...

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis

por | | 0 comments

When the ladies at Gertrude & Mabel sent Sharon and Francis' rehearsal dinner photos to me, I could not wait to share them with you. The photos are wonderful, and all of the details are so much fun. Plus, I thought the red and white color scheme was fitting for Valentine's Day.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
The wedding and rehearsal dinner took place in Bristol, a town that straddles the Virginia/Tennessee border, and Sharon's hometown.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
140 guests joined in the fun at The Olde Farm for the rehearsal dinner.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
Sharon wore a dress by Miu Miu and shoes by Sigerson Morrison.

The evening was planned in the spirit of "cheap and cheerful." Red bandannas used for napkins were purchased from Oriental Trading. Red geraniums from a local garden center were placed in basket from the Texas Basket Company as living centerpieces.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
Since Sharon and Francis live in New York City, and Francis is from England, they thought it would be fun to treat their out-of-town guests to some Southern food and music - barbecue and and bluegrass (a local bluegrass band played)! Dinner was catered by The Olde Farm, and included Southern favorites like pulled pork, barbecue chicken, baked beans, and slaw. Beer was kept cold in big galvanized tubs full of ice, with vintage bottle openers hanging from ribbons tied to the handles.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
Strawberry shortcake was served in red- and white-checked paper trays.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
There was also homemade ice cream in a variety of regional flavors such as peach and Southern Comfort pecan.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
Sharon designed the paper napkins and wooden spoons to match a motif on the invitations (she is a graphic designer at Yours Etcetera).

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
The large barn was decorated with custom papel picado banners from Mexican Sugar Skull - a great keepsake!

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
To make the huge barn seem more intimate, they "lowered" the ceiling by hanging the paper banners and strings of round party lights.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
The piñata in Sharon and Francis' initials was a huge hit. It was filled with all kinds of adult-appropriate goodies, like mini liquor bottle chocolates, candy cigarettes, fake engagement rings, little metal bird and bug pins from Silver Crow Creations, and old fashioned candy from Economy Candy in New York. The pins and rings were wrapped in small glassine bags, sealed with a red dot sticker from Staples.

Rehearsal Dinner: Sharon & Francis
The red lanterns were purchased from Oriental Trading.

The evening ended with a big bonfire and s'mores - graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate were in little bags nearby, along with sticks for marshmallow roasting.

This looks like such a fun party - thank you so much to Sharon and Francis for sharing all of the details with us, and to Gertrude and Mabel for sharing your perfect photos! For even more inspiration, check out Sharon and Francis' beautiful wedding, featured on Martha Stewart Weddings.

You know I can't go too many days without posting a green and white inspiration board! I can't help it! Especially when I see a beautiful photo like the one styled by the lovely, talented Chelsea Fuss - creamy white with a touch of green. I decided to go with a really pale pistachio green to create a soft, clean palette for this wedding board.

Mood: soft, fresh
Palette: pale pistachio green, cream

A Little More Fall & Some Fabulous

por | | 0 comments

A Little More Fall & Some Fabulous
I wanted to share another fall runner with you as well as some of our other latest creations! Dawn came to us way back in 2007 for custom monograms for her October '08 wedding. She wanted designs that incorporated leaves and had a natural elegance... so that's exactly what we did! She then came back to us requesting to have two of her designs placed on runners. The first one she selected for her aisle runner is below (see the post from 8/26) and then she wanted this for her table runner. Now we've done lots of leaves in the past, but this was definitely the most intricate since it included the little acorn. I absolutely adore the way it came out!

And not to be forgotten, here is some more of our most recent work for our fabulous brides. And wait 'til you see what we have in store for you tomorrow... here's a hint: I'm seeing dots...A Little More Fall & Some Fabulous
