I'm not sure you understand. I'm sure she'll correct me, but I can't remember ever seeing my mom make a cake from scratch, ever. If you remember your childhoods, most of our moms made funfetti cakes. So for me, this was a HUUUUUUGE accomplishment.
I made Smitten Kitchen's Blueberry Boy Bait recipe. Apparently, the original recipe was created by a teenage girl in the 50s for the Pillsbury Baking contest. She said she named the cake for its special powers.
I'm the kind of person who like for things to look just like the picture. And when my brown sugar was coming out in these cookie-sized clumps, I immediately got stressed. Is it wrong that my brown sugar is rock hard? I'm guessing yes, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
The recipe was by far the most complicated mixing I've done thus far. In one bowl, I combined flour, baking powder and salt. In another, I combined brown sugar, granulated sugar and TWO STICKS OF BUTTER. Omigod, so much butter.
When I went to make this cake, I realized I only had one stick and I had to go out at 9:45 p.m. to my nearby Target to buy more. To answer your inevitable question: Yes, the check-out lady DID judge me.
I was supposed to mix the butter and sugars with my hand-mixer on medium-high speed. Funny, but all that mush slows it down quite a bit.
This is the part of baking that always stressed me out. The idea that I will NEVER get batter or dough out of that mess. But thankfully, adding eggs always saves the day.
After adding the eggs, I poured a third of the flour mixture and half of a cup of whole milk and mixed.
Once that first bit of flour and milk mixed in, I added the rest of each and mixed until it looked ready to go. Then I folded in half a cup of blueberries.
Once the batter was safely spread in my greased pan, I sprinkled more blueberries on top and the element that makes this cake magical: sugar and cinnamon! I popped it into the oven at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes and TA DA:
MY VERY FIRST HOMEMADE CAKE! Doesn't it look pretty? And edible?
But my joy, it was short-lived. Because this cake was destined for a pot-luck event and I needed to get it into a portable container. And here's where my "newly domesticated" title reared its ugly head: I had NO IDEA how to get that cake into my container.
In most cases, you would flip upside down. But with this cake, the cinnamon sugar needed to be on top. I held the pan up and loosened the sides. I wiggled it, tried to ease it out with my hands, but realized quickly that wouldn't work. So I picked up the pan and tried to slide the cake, like a sheet, into the waiting glass container. And because the laws of physics were working against me, look what happened:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
My first thought (after my sentiment stated above) was, "Well, of course." So I had to take my very first homemade cake to this potluck event, where it had to compete with a berry torte and a strawberry cheesecake, and let me tell you, it lost. Some people took slices, but I mean...c'mon. This was obviously the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree of cakes.
Thankfully, it tastes delicious, so I'll be nibbling away at it for breakfast for the next few days. So this will be the first thing I've made that I will deem an epic success AND a tragic failure.
And Sean told me that, had I made this cake for him before the engagement, he would have been persuaded to marry me. So single ladies, best get baking!
Just finished up with some logos for two different wedding & event planners and wanted to share our favorite for each! The first is the designer pick for Events Extraordinare, owner Jennah came to us with a request for something bold and EXTRAordinary with curvy detailing. The second is the designer pick for Made of Honor; owner Katrina asked for something elegant, regal, and romantic. We love how these turned out!
In other news, we are SO overwhelmed with corporate logo orders! If you have a logo order pending, we promise we're working as fast as possible to get them all finished in the time frame indicated, but it may take a day or two longer than anticipated as the orders seem to be flying in! I love the use of watercolors on the web site for a band I love, Camera Obscura.
When I took watercolors my senior year of college, I figured I'd be painting lots of English gardens and sailboats. I just pictured watercolors as really fuddy duddy. But the skill and challenge that comes from getting the right balance of ethereal transparency and bold color really brought the painting style to life for me and I think this portrait is a master class in the medium. Isn't that pop of sulphur around the eyes just perfect? Looks like it's time to bust out the palette.

Title: Tis the Season @ The Great American teach In Multi-Guitar Jam/Song
Here's me at my son's Elementary School for The Great American Teach In playing/jamming, and hopefully inspiring the room full of kids (who I was not allowed to show in the video) to play guitar. I used a Boss RC-20XL Loop Station, my green PRS Ltd Ed. Semi-Hollow, my custom Taylor 712E (with the Fishman Blender system), and an Ibanez AEB10 all through a Marshall AS-50R acoustic amp except the PRS which was plugged into a Fender Super Sonic amp. There were no effects used at all...I was not even mic'd up...it's just the amps and room acoustics. This is the middle part...the song/playing...I may post the 1st part (which was an explanation of the various guitars and their sounds, scale lengths, etc.) and the 3rd part (which was a question/answer session) later.
For what it's worth, I really messed up the last measure of the beginning drum part...but as it was live, and I had already had one "false start", I rolled with it and tried to make it work. That right there is the biggest lesson or advice I can give as a musician and performer...roll with it...forget about your mistakes and just move on. Sometimes you can turn your mistakes into something cool (that you would not have normally done) and sometimes you just have a train wreck...but don't stop...keep trying and finish the song or whatever it is you are doing. I will eventually get around to posting some of my original work here and one song in particular, "Lili", I recorded by doing live lead guitar (me) with a drummer (Timm Biery) and a bass player (Andy Whitaker)...I thought I had blown the lead (which I had never rehearsed on purpose...I wanted it to feel and sound spontaneous), and thought about stopping but kept going...thinking in the back of my head that I would just overdub something, and it wound up being great (in my humble opinion of course)...held notes that I normally would not have held...anyways, always keep going...be "the little train that could"...never give up!
I used Thomastik-Infeld strings on all my instruments. I am now a dealer for them as well as the Mbrace stands (which made using all 3 instruments at once possible). The electric guitar strings go for $9.95 a set, the acoustic guitar set goes for $15.95 a set, and the acoustic bass strings go for $52.95 a set for exactly what I was using here. The Mbrace stands go for $54.99. Shipping is usually $2-3 for strings and $8.00 for the stand via USPS. As I prepare for my wedding, so many of the details are ripped right from my favorite party I ever organized — a going-away party for my friends Ryan and Mark in the summer of 2007. The party was held at Ryan's home in Rockbridge County, Va. and couldn't have ever happened without a dedicated group of friends who spent the day decorating. My good friend, Sara taught us all how to make fabulous tissue paper flowers, which we tucked into glass soda bottles.
I bought all of these mason jars to drink from; I'm planning to use mason jars for centerpieces, votives and lanterns at my wedding. Amanda and our friend, Ashleigh, took it upon themselves to hammer individual designs into the lids, which was such a lovely and personal touch.
Since the party was deep in the country, Ryan's parents provided tents for our overnight guests.
This is our romance tree, filled with battery-operated paper lanterns and paper flowers.
Isn't that lovely against the Virginia mountains?
Inspired by Lena Corwin's wedding, I set up this Polaroid photo booth. If Polaroid film is still available, I'd love to do it again for my wedding.
Gotta love the light of the magic hour.
I scoured thrift shops for antique postcards, which I pinned to this plant along with a note instructing guests to use a "farewell type of sentiment."
We finished the night with sparklers and chugged cheap apple wine. It was perfect and I can only hope my wedding is as much fun. By the way, all of the photos are by Ryan Burke Photography.

Title: The Invitation
A sequel to last year's "Love Letters." This time Natasha is the star as she tries to come up with the perfect wedding invitation.
We burned this animation onto DVD's and sent it out as our actual wedding invitation. It took nine months to complete, and was produced entirely as part of a group project class at the Art Institute of California - San Francisco where I'm an instructor of animation.

People. I DID IT. I MADE A CAKE FROM SCRATCH.
I'm the kind of person who like for things to look just like the picture. And when my brown sugar was coming out in these cookie-sized clumps, I immediately got stressed. Is it wrong that my brown sugar is rock hard? I'm guessing yes, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
The recipe was by far the most complicated mixing I've done thus far. In one bowl, I combined flour, baking powder and salt. In another, I combined brown sugar, granulated sugar and TWO STICKS OF BUTTER. Omigod, so much butter.
I was supposed to mix the butter and sugars with my hand-mixer on medium-high speed. Funny, but all that mush slows it down quite a bit. 
After adding the eggs, I poured a third of the flour mixture and half of a cup of whole milk and mixed.
Once that first bit of flour and milk mixed in, I added the rest of each and mixed until it looked ready to go. Then I folded in half a cup of blueberries.
Once the batter was safely spread in my greased pan, I sprinkled more blueberries on top and the element that makes this cake magical: sugar and cinnamon! I popped it into the oven at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes and TA DA:
MY VERY FIRST HOMEMADE CAKE! Doesn't it look pretty? And edible?
