New Toys

por | | 0 comments

So I unexpectedly had the night off because yesterday my manager scheduled me for ACLS *advanced cardiac life support* certification tomorrow. (since I have to get certified soon for the Emergency room YAY!) So thankfully I was home when the UPS man brought me a box with these beauties inside

Photobucket

Brian also included Canon XSI for Dummies and a very helpful DVD on how to use the camera. I am definitely in the beginner beginner category but I am SO excited to practice and learn more about how the camera works so I can start to use it creatively.

I started playing around with different settings while my cats were walking around...and look what I did..

Alex.

I STILL can't believe I actually took that picture...I'm so proud of myself!

That camera will be attached to my face while my family is here next week

Learn how to cook delicious Japanese food! A fun Death Note anime spoof + Japanese Gothic Lolita twist on Food Network cooking shows! Starring J-pop culture author / cute food blogger / Goth designer LA CARMINA (www.lacarmina.com) ONLINE STORE NOW OPEN!

"Hello. I am Kojin, the Japanese Kitchen God. You can see me because you touched the Death Cookbook."

HOW TO USE...
Write down the name of a recipe and close the book. When you open the book, a recipe from the realm of the gods will appear.

THERE ARE 3 CATCHES...
One, only those who touch the cookbook can see Kojin and use the cookbook.
Two, you can only make one entry in the cookbook every 24 hours.
Three, once a recipe appears, you have 24 hours to gather the ingredients and successfully make it. If you don't, you will turn into a hungry ghost.

BLACK SESAME SEED ICE CREAM RECIPE
3/4 cup heavy cream
3 egg yolks
1/2 cup organic honey
3/4 cup 2% organic milk
3 tablespoons kuro goma (black sesame seeds)

Roast the sesame seeds in a pan. Let cool and then coarsely grind.
Heat the milk in a saucepan until it almost boils. Reduce heat to low.
Stir together the egg yolks and honey. Add one tablespoon of the milk to the egg mixture to temper it (warm the mixture up to the same temperature as the milk so that the eggs dont scramble).
Add the egg mixture and sesame seeds to the milk. Cook on low heat until it is slightly thickened and coats the back of a spoon, about 5 minutes.
Transfer to a large container and let cool.
Lightly whip the cream and add it to the sesame-milk mixture. Refrigerate for a few hours.
Place the container in the freezer. Every few hours, remove the mixture and stir it vigorously with a wooden spoon to break up the ice crystals. Return the mixture to the freezer and repeat until smooth and frozen.

Camera Obscura watercolors

Camera Obscura watercolors
Camera Obscura watercolors
I love the use of watercolors on the web site for a band I love, Camera Obscura.

When I took watercolors my senior year of college, I figured I'd be painting lots of English gardens and sailboats. I just pictured watercolors as really fuddy duddy. But the skill and challenge that comes from getting the right balance of ethereal transparency and bold color really brought the painting style to life for me and I think this portrait is a master class in the medium. Isn't that pop of sulphur around the eyes just perfect? Looks like it's time to bust out the palette.

P.S. Camera Obscura is coming to the 9:30 Club in D.C. on June 21.

Monica & Andrew were married June 21, 2008 in Kansasville, Wisconsin. Bride Monica came to us with her own monogram and asked us to use it on a custom aisle runner and unity candle.

A note from Monica: "Thank you for the amazing aisle runner and unity candle. We loved them both, they were the finishing touches that helped to make our wedding beautiful. I have already had friends asking where they can get an aisle runner like mine."

What a sweet couple! Best wishes Monica & Andrew!

Board #325: Let's Be Jolly

por | | 0 comments

I'm so sorry for such a late post today - I just got back from New York late last night, and have so much catching up to do! Anyway, I thought we'd end our week of winter wedding inspiration with red and white - peppermint sticks, pomegranates and seeds, poinsettias, and a hit of red lipstick of course. This one might be a little too Christmas-y for a wedding, but it could certainly make for a sweet holiday party!

Mood: cheerful cocktail party
Palette: snow white, cranberry red

Classic Black & White

por | | 0 comments

Classic Black & WhiteThere's just something about a monogram that's done in all black against a white background (whether it be a table runner, parasol, aisle runner, banner, etc.) that just exudes a classic, sophisticated feel. The 3 table runners above are for couple Hilary & Kurtis who will be married in June, and the R parasol is for Canadian couple Mandy & Scott who will be married in April. Best wishes to these two wonderful couples!

Wedding Website Therapy

por | | 0 comments

I'm pretty sure that I've mentioned that in my "real life" I'm a school counselor. So when I came across this website I knew I would just have to share. The website is called "True Bride Confessions" and it's a forum where brides (past, present, and future) can annomously post about anything going on in their lives that they need to confess. Confession is, in my opinion, an extremely theraputic outlet. So often we hold in what we are thinking or feeling... sometimes we do this because we're embarassed of our thoughts and feelings, or most likely, we don't want to burden anyone else with our problems. What we don't realize is that by keeping things in we're placing a heavy burden on ourselves. It's time to let it out! Go and vent about your overbearing future mother-in-law or your lazy fiance who refuses to help with any of the planning... take advantage of this great outlet! The best part is... it's completely anonymous- so no one will ever know! Don't have anything to vent? Go check it out anyway- you may be able to relate to some of the confessions and hey, some of them may even make you feel better about your own life! *warning: some foul language

Bridesmaid Invitations

Bridesmaid Invitations

Bridesmaid Invitations

I love nothing more than getting a letter in the mail. I wanted to do something special to ask four lovely ladies to be my bridesmaids and while a phone call (with the squealing and jumping up and down) would usually be best, I thought it would be nice to add a little formality to their days.

I bought this lovely robin's egg cardstock and a gold calligraphy pen. I wish my handwriting were better; I struggle mightily with cursive. But the best part was getting to use a wax seal, complete with the letter "K" for my future last name. I purposely didn't put my return address on the envelopes because I wanted my girls to get the letters and be like, "What the what?!"

They all seemed surprised and maybe a little confused about how to proceed, but that's okay. Sarah was like, "I figured I should send you a card that said 'Yes.'" LOL. But now they have little keepsakes for their scrapbooks.

Lemon Chicken Scalloppini

por | | 0 comments

Lemon Chicken Scalloppini I've had the last remnants of a box of white wine in my fridge for...too long. I knew the wine wouldn't be good enough to drink, but I thought I could try my hand at cooking with wine.

I found this recipe for Lemon Chicken Scalloppini through Foodgawker (an excellent way to sort through the cooking blogosphere!). I had lemon, I had chicken, I had wine. Sounded like I was in business.

I did not, however, have capers, so I can't accurately attest to the deliciousness of this dish. But my version, sans capers, was moist and wonderfully flavored, both subtle and zesty.

Lemon Chicken ScalloppiniI sliced a chicken breast in half to get thinner slices, then pounded it with a mallet and flour'd it up, seasoned with salt and pepper.

Lemon Chicken Scalloppini Then I fried the chicken in butter and olive oil (seriously my butter consumption is through the roof!) until both sides were browned.

Lemon Chicken Scalloppini Then I added 1/4 cup of white wine and a cup of chicken broth and let that simmer until the sauce reduce by half. Finally, I added lemon pieces and let those simmer, as well.

Lemon Chicken Scalloppini Garnished with parsley and then sat down to eat.

Cooking with alcohol, I've found, is very fun from a chemistry perspective. It's like all the best experiments you ever did, where you would add one ingredient to another and suddenly there was hissing and crackling and steam and a surge of bubbles and an incredibly satisfying hiss. I love that!

P.S. This was great weeknight cooking; fast and easy and delicious.

Board #241: Love Triumphant

por | | 0 comments
I am in love with the image of all the old canceled stamps from around the world, and that was the inspiration for this bold and bright wedding board. I see no problem in mixing red with fuchsia with pale pink, especially when set against a clean white backdrop. It's a palette that could work in winter or spring, and done the right way it could even work in summer. Even though red is pretty dramatic, and the title of this board comes from a quote about red roses - that they are for "love triumphant" - I don't think that it takes itself too seriously here, and that's when I love it most.

Mood: romantic, bold
Palette: red, fuchsia, pale pink, white
