Talk about a beautiful backyard wedding... Kristin and Jack were married in September '08 in Kristin's parents backyard in Florence, NJ. Bride Kristin already had a design for her aisle runner when she contacted us and she wanted it in all black against a white runner, which just looks so classic and clean. Apparently gray is the accent color of the year, but I'm not sick of it yet! I love the way it looks here - both charcoal and dove gray - paired with pale pale blue. Something so sophisticated about it...

One way to save is by choosing a venue that is all-inclusive. Many hotel ballrooms and banquet halls offer this option, but so do other venues - like the incredibly dramatic Balboa Park in San Diego, which served as the inspiration for this citrus wedding board. Citrus fruits were the other point of inspiration for today's board, although fruit can be a great decorative option any time of year: persimmons and pomegranates (or citrus!) for winter, blueberries or apricots in spring, berries and peaches in summer, or apples and pears in fall.
Who says...you have to have floral centerpieces?

The Paper: To give your guests a sense of the citrus theme, use an old orange crate label as your inspiration - check out these labels for a customizable template. If you want to add a little extra something to your invitations, get some friends and some movies and spend an evening (or a few) making envelope liners. It can be tedious, but it's one of those elements that you can take on yourself to save some money - you can find an envelope liner template kit from Paper Source for $9.50.
The Fashion: For something borrowed, wear the veil of a friend, sister, aunt... My sister borrowed a mantilla veil from a family friend to wear at her wedding and looked beautiful. For a customized dress, head to Olivia Luca's online boutique to create your own for as little as $300. Or, take a note from Julia and order a cream colored bridesmaid dress from Siri.
The Decor: Seasonal fruit is a great way to save - just think how cheap a crate of oranges or clementines are in season! Fill bowls with fruit for centerpieces, including stems and leaves if you can. Go for a single large bowl in the center of a round table or a row of smaller bowls along a banquet table - check Jamali Garden or Cost Plus World Market for interesting containers. Hang citrus colored lanterns from trees for a lot of impact at a low cost. Also, by choosing an incredible venue (like Balboa Park in this board), you really won't have to do much decorating to pull of a dramatic look.
The Flowers: A bouquet in fiery shades of orange will look beautiful with the rest of your citrus decor. And to fit with the theme, how about boutonnieres of kumquats and a fragrant orange blossom?
The Food: Elevate simple foods like potato chips by serving them as late-night snacks in parchment paper cones, or a single clementine wrapped in parchment paper at each seat. Save by asking your baker to create a simple chocolate cake, and decorate it yourself with candied citrus fruits.
Other Details: Instead of paying for a bouquet for each bridesmaid, have them carry a fan or parasol down the aisle - it's an unexpected look and can cost under $2 for a fan, or under $10 for a paper parasol. Another way to save is by choosing a venue where everything is included - tables and chairs, catering, cake, event coordination. While you might not have quite as many choices, it can definitely help keep costs down.
Splurges: Rent a classic car to make your getaway - it's not a necessary element, but if you save elsewhere, it can be a fun detail, and definitely a great photo-op (especially if you decorate it with painted cans or pom pom garlands.

Words cannot even begin to express how much we adore these photos from Jessica & Ben's wedding! We created their custom aisle runner using monogram 1D, which the couple also used on their ceremony programs. One of Sean's coworkers is moving away and in honor of cheesecake being his favorite dessert, I decided to make mini cheesecakes again for movie night. But this time, I wanted to try mint chocolate chip. I skimmed a few recipes, but ultimately I went with a bastardized version of the Martha Stewart recipe.
I crushed teddy grahams again for the crust. Seriously, so good; much better than oreo crusts, in my opinion. It's buttery and more crackery (yeah, so that's not a word) than oreos, not to mention less crumbley.
To make a crust, you crush the crackers, then add sugar and melted butter and stir until the crumbs have absorbed the butter. Then pack the crumbs into baking liners and bake for 15 minutes until the crust has set.
In the meantime, I whipped up the cheesecake, which took half the time it did the first time I made it. You just beat cream cheese, then add sugar and vanilla, which is the sepia color you see above.
Then add two eggs and sour cream, which gives it that smooth consistency.
And here's where it got unfamiliar: adding extract and food coloring. I added just a teaspoon of peppermint extract and though I was convinced it wouldn't be enough, I was wrong. A teaspoon is the perfect amount!
Then I was supposed to add two drops of food coloring, but that's harder to do than it sounds. I added more like three drops and two dribbles and waited to see what would happen...
It looks perfect! Food coloring is kind of amazing; two drops yields SO much color. I added chocolate chips, which of course sunk to the bottom. As a result, some of the cheesecakes had one or two chips and some were FULL of chips.
Ready to go in the oven...
And fresh out of the oven. All those burned areas you see are a result of my sloppy pouring method. I am unskilled in keeping my baked goods neat and tidy.
After they came out, I had a notion to top them with chocolate ganache. I mixed chocolate chips and cream and voila! Ganache! It was tooooo easy, easier than it should be. But that doesn't mean I couldn't mess it up.
My error came when I enthusiastically made the ganache seconds after the cheesecakes came out of the oven. They're supposed to cool for an hour before adding the ganache, but of course they cooled for about six minutes before it was ready. Not knowing what to do, I just left it on very low heat and stirred occasionally. When I finally thought it was time to add the ganache to the cheesecakes, it had begun to separate, the thick chocolate leaving a yellow oily mess in its wake. And me being me, I went ahead and poured it onto a waiting cheesecake.
BAD IDEA. Gloopy, scary, separated mess. When it hardened, it had yellow splotches. Very disgusting. Distraught, I whined to Sean, who wisely said, "Okay, so make another batch of ganache."
Oh. Alright then.
So, this is round two of the ganache, which went decidedly better.

The cheesecakes are delicious, the ganache magical BUT I'm not sure it was wise to try the ganache move with mini cheesecakes. I think it would work much better with a full-size cheesecake made in a springform pan; the paper liners were buckling under its weight. Otherwise, this was awesome and I packed one for work today that was the envy of my coworker!
