This is a group of monograms I am currently working on for a couple who is getting married next March. They're colors are eggplant purple and sage and they aren't quite sure of their theme yet. They are both irish and wanted to possibly reflect on that, they also wanted to keep the monograms elegant and formal using the font you see.
This set of coordinating wish tree cards and sign were created for a romantic, antique style wedding. The couple wanted to incorporate blush pink and silver into the design. Packing lunch is very difficult when you've grown up. You're conscious of people seeing your food in the communal fridge; you're conscious of people judging if you bring a bunch of fatty, unhealthy food. You want to save money, but you don't want to eat the same thing every day. Peanut butter and jelly just don't cut it like they once did, am I right?
So when I saw this recipe for a Watermelon and Feta salad on the Food Network's site, I thought, "What the hey, let's try it."
OMG, you guys. Watermelon and feta go together so perfectly, like roast beef and cheddar or chocolate and mint or Peaches and Herb. The salad was so easy to make, I'm not even going to link to the recipe because it's seriously two sentences:
Toss together arugula (or in my case, baby spinach), watermelon chunks, feta, red onion and if you want, olives.
Drizzle with homemade vinaigrette of one part white wine vinegar to three parts olive oil, with pepper and salt.
HANDY TIP: If you have the kind of job that, like mine, involves getting up in people's faces and asking them questions, you may want to pack some gum to negate that red onion. I was full of stank at a meeting I covered the other day and also full of regret for not anticipating that effect.
I've had the last remnants of a box of white wine in my fridge for...too long. I knew the wine wouldn't be good enough to drink, but I thought I could try my hand at cooking with wine.
I found this recipe for Lemon Chicken Scalloppini through Foodgawker (an excellent way to sort through the cooking blogosphere!). I had lemon, I had chicken, I had wine. Sounded like I was in business.
I did not, however, have capers, so I can't accurately attest to the deliciousness of this dish. But my version, sans capers, was moist and wonderfully flavored, both subtle and zesty.
I sliced a chicken breast in half to get thinner slices, then pounded it with a mallet and flour'd it up, seasoned with salt and pepper.
Then I fried the chicken in butter and olive oil (seriously my butter consumption is through the roof!) until both sides were browned.
Then I added 1/4 cup of white wine and a cup of chicken broth and let that simmer until the sauce reduce by half. Finally, I added lemon pieces and let those simmer, as well.
Garnished with parsley and then sat down to eat.
Cooking with alcohol, I've found, is very fun from a chemistry perspective. It's like all the best experiments you ever did, where you would add one ingredient to another and suddenly there was hissing and crackling and steam and a surge of bubbles and an incredibly satisfying hiss. I love that!
P.S. This was great weeknight cooking; fast and easy and delicious.
